What is Turmeric?

A herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae, Turmeric has been used in countries like Sri Lanka and India for over 4000 years to do more than just boost the flavour of food.  According to research, the active ingredient in turmeric – curcumin – potentially could prevent illnesses such as dementia and cancer. So you might want to enjoy the benefits of this yellow spice by sprinkling some into your curry tonight!

Let’s get the facts of Turmeric

In 2009, the World Alzheimer’s Report advised that 7.2% of Western Europeans and 6.4% of Australasians suffer from dementia by the age of 60 however, by the same age only 3.6% of South Asians are dementia sufferers.  Likewise, cancer rates in India are significantly lower than those in more developed countries such as the US, as reported by the World Health Organisation.

Cancer researcher Ralph W. Moss believes turmeric is the reason for this effect.  As a natural anti-inflammatory, turmeric not only inhibits the growth of new blood vessels in tumours it’s also a powerful antioxidant.

6 things you may not know about Turmeric

  • Wards off Alzheimer’s disease
Based on research it is believed that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric could be strong enough to break down conditions in the brain called amyloid plaques that lead to Alzheimer’s disease. “If the blood vessels remain less clogged, then certain parts of the brain might be fed more easily with oxygen and that would keep the brain functioning better,” explains Hourigan. Clinical human trials are currently planned at The Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centre at the University of California.
  • Helps to prevent cancer
According to a study conducted in New Jersey, it was found that combined with cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower, curcumin may help treat and prevent prostate cancer. There’s also signs it may help to prevent childhood leukaemia, breast, skin and pancreatic cancer, along with multiple myeloma. In addition to this, a book written by nutritionist Jonny Bowden, The 150 Healthiest Foods On Earth (Fair Winds), lists at least 30 studies have been done showing that curcumin may have an anti-tumour effect, “either reducing the number or size of tumours or the percentage of animals who developed them”.  He also states that a study conducted in 2006 showed curcumin suppressed the growth of human colon cancer however, more human research is needed.“While no-one is claiming that turmeric cures cancer, there is plenty of reason to believe it is a useful adjunct to a healthy diet,” says Bowden.
  • Reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes
According to animal studies, Curcumin may help to prevent the build-up of LDL (bad cholesterol) in the blood vessels therefore lowering cholesterol.  This could possibly help to prevent heart attacks and strokes by stopping the build-up of plaque (atherosclerosis) that can block arteries.
  • Combats inflammatory diseases
Using a formula containing turmeric, one study showed a reduction in the disability and pain associated with osteoarthritis.  It has yet to be studied on it’s own for this condition however, early research into other inflammatory conditions such as inflammation of the eye (uveitis), inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis) and multiple sclerosis are already showing positive signs. This means the natural anti-inflammatory qualities of turmeric suggests it could work well as an anti-inflammatory medication but without the side effects.
  • Helps indigestion and weight loss
Experts believe curcumin may improve digestion and help to control weight as it stimulates the gallbladder which produces bile and bile helps to digest fat.  It has been found in at least one study that it treats indigestion, reducing symptoms of bloating and gas.
  • Assists diabetes sufferers
If adding turmeric into your diet it might be a good idea to monitor your blood sugar levels as animal studies have shown that it can cause your blood sugar levels to drop.  If this is combined with diabetes medication, blood sugar levels may drop too low, causing hypoglycaemia.

karen edwardsI have been using Bio-Medicals turmeric for 12 months now since the onset of debilitating knee pain. Along with physiotherapy, I have been using the turmeric as a natural anti-inflammatory rather than relying on the prolonged use of potentially harmful anti-inflammatory drugs. I’m pleased to say that my knee issue has now been resolved but I will continue to take this product for the other health benefits that turmeric offers. Also, I should mention that I looked at other turmeric products on the market and liked the Bio-Medicals product because of the pepper content (to make the curcumin more bio – available) and the added bonus of ginger and pro-biotics.

sharonHaving suffered from digestive issues from a young age, I was thrilled to discover Bio-Medicals’ Turmeric Capsules – which not only contain turmeric (the best anti-inflammatory ingredient for soothing an inflamed digestive tract), but also black pepper to help with its absorption. I was also elated to find the capsules contain probiotics – it’s like getting 3 separate medications in one! I take them when I go travelling and am likely to eat foreign foods that may cause an upset stomach. Another bonus is they don’t require refrigeration. My mum even takes them to help with her rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Amazing what one little capsule can do!
